Just For Fun:  Carol’s Corvette had a dead battery in her garage and she called the mechanic’s shop.  Since she had to go to work she told the manager, “I’ll leave the key under the mat.  Fix the Corvette, leave the bill on the counter and I will send you a check.”

“Oh, by the way, don’t worry about my dog Spike.  He won’t bother you.  But, whatever you do, do NOT, under any circumstances, talk to my parrot.”  “I REPEAT; DO NOT TALK TO MY PARROT!!”

When the mechanic arrived at Carol’s he discovered the biggest, meanest looking dog he has ever seen.  But, just as she had said, the dog just lay there on the floor watching the mechanic go about his work.  The parrot however drove him nuts the whole time with his incessant yelling, cursing and name calling.  Finally the mechanic couldn’t contain himself any longer and yelled, “Shut up, you stupid, ugly bird!!”

To which the bird replied, “Get him, Spike!”

Just for fun:  A man goes out and buys a new Corvette Convertible.  One night he takes it out for a spin, and stops at a red light.  An old man pulls up to him riding a mo-ped.  The old man looks over at the Vette and says, “What kind of car ya got there sonny?”  The man replies, “It’s a 2009 Corvette, the best sports car in the USA, it cost me over $60,000.”

“That’s a lot of money” says the old man.  “Why does it cost so much?”  The Corvette owner replies, “Because they can go over 170 miles per hour!”  The old man pokes his head in the window and looks around.  Leaning back on his mo-ped, the old man says, “That’s a pretty nice car alright!”

Just then the light changes, so the guy decides to show the old man what the car can do.  He floors it, and in a few seconds it reaches 120 MPH.  Suddenly he notices a dot in his rear view mirror that seems to be catching up to him.  Afraid it may be a cop, he slows down to 65 and suddenly, whhhhoooooosssshhh!  Something whips by him going much faster!

“What on earth could be going faster than this Vette?”  the man asks himself.  Then ahead of him, he sees a dot coming towards him.  Whhhhooooossssshhhh!  It goes by him again, heading in the opposite direction!  And it sorta looked like the old man on the mo-ped!  “Couldn’t be,” thinks the guy.  “How could a mo-ped out run a Vette?”

Then again he sees a dot in the rear view mirror!  Whhhhoooooossssshhhh-Blam!!  It plows into the back of the Vette!  The man jumps out.  It is the old man!  Of course, the mo-ped and the old man are in a world of hurt.  The guy runs up to the man and cries, “You’re hurt bad!  Is there anything I can do for you?”

The old man groans and replies, “Yes, could you please unhook my suspenders from your side mirror?”

Just for fun: A man goes out and buys a new Corvette Convertible. One night he takes it out for a spin, and stops at a red light. An old man pulls up to him riding a mo-ped. The old man looks over at the Vette and says, "What kind of car ya got there sonny?" The man replies, "It’s a 2009 Corvette, the best sports car in the USA, it cost me over $60,000."

"That’s a lot of money" says the old man. "Why does it cost so much?" The Corvette owner replies, "Because they can go over 170 miles per hour!" The old man pokes his head in the window and looks around. Leaning back on his mo-ped, the old man says, "That’s a pretty nice car alright!"

"What on earth could be going faster than this Vette?" the man asks himself. Then ahead of him, he sees a dot coming towards him. Whhhhooooossssshhhh! It goes by him again, heading in the opposite direction! And it sorta looked like the old man on the mo-ped! "Couldn’t be," thinks the guy. "How could a mo-ped out run a Vette?"

Then again he sees a dot in the rear view mirror! Whhhhoooooossssshhhh-Blam!! It plows into the back of the Vette! The man jumps out. It is the old man! Of course, the mo-ped and the old man are in a world of hurt. The guy runs up to the man and cries, "You’re hurt bad! Is there anything I can do for you?"

The old man groans and replies, "Yes, could you please unhook my suspenders from your side mirror?"

Just for fun: A man decided that he was going to ride a 10 speed bike from Phoenix to Flagstaff. He got as far as Black Canyon City before the mountains became just too much and he could go no further. He stuck his thumb out, but after 3 hours, he hadn’t got a single person to stop. Finally, a guy in a Corvette pulled over and offered him a ride. Of course, the bike wouldn’t fit into the car. The Corvette owner found a piece of rope lying by the highway and tied it to his bumper. He tied the other end to the bike and told the man if he was going to fast, to honk on his bike and he would slow down.

Everything went fine for the first 30 miles. Suddenly, another Corvette blew past them. Not to be outdone, the Corvette pulling the bike took off after the other Corvette. A short distance down the road, the Corvettes, both going well over 120 mph, blew through a speed trap.

The police officer noted the speed from his radar gun and called ahead to the other officer that he had two Corvettes headed his way at over 120 mph. HE then relayed, "…and you’re not going to believe this, but there’s a guy on a 10 speed bike honking to pass!!"

Just For Fun:

Taking off down the road, he pushed it to 80 mph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left. "Amazing," he thought as he flew down I-75, pushing the pedal even more.

Looking in his review mirror, he saw a Florida State Trooper, blue lights flashing and siren blaring. He floored it to 100 mph, then 110, then 120. Suddenly he thought, "What am I doing? "I’m too old for this!" and pulled over to await the trooper’s arrival.

Pulling in behind him, the trooper got out of his vehicle and walked up to the CORVETTE. He looked at his watch, and then said, "Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes. Today is Friday. If you can give me a new reason for speeding—a reason I have never before heard—I’ll let you go."

The old gentleman paused and then said: "Three years ago, my wife ran off with a Florida State Trooper. I thought you were bringing her back."

"Have a good day, Sir," replied the trooper.

Meeting:  The September meeting will be on Thursday, September 11th at the Elks Club at 6pm.  Jan R. won the 50/50 raffle and Bill N, won the engraved shot glass at the August meeting.

Past Events:  The August meeting was a cold and soggy one.  It actually wasn’t too bad under the picnic shelter, and we still had a good turnout.

We had three cars go to Sioux Falls the night before the Spearfish Classic and drive back with the caravan.  During the Classic we ate at the Whiskey Chophouse and Shoot the Bull in Spearfish.  We had just enough time to take in Vette Street before a big storm blew in to town.

Upcoming events:  We will go to a car show at Devils Tower on Saturday, August 30th.  We will leave from the old Napa store parking lot on the east side of Exit 48 at 9:30am.

Larry & Darlene will host our annual time and distance rally on Sunday, September 14th.  More details at the next meeting.  Watch your e-mail if you can’t make the meeting.

August 31, 2009 is the Caravan to the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky.  Get more information at:  www.nationalcorvettecaravan.com. Larry & Darlene are planning to go.  Contact Larry if you plan to go so everyone can coordinate hotel rooms along the route.

Other:  It is time to start thinking about the calendar again, so remember to get a good picture taken of your car this year.  For those who aren’t familiar with it, each year we put together a calendar with members’ cars as the pictures for each month.  Please let me know what you like and don’t like about the calendar.  I am looking for some new ideas.

Just for Fun:  Ten Commandments for the Car Collector

By Donald Peterson for the Feb. 1979 issue of Car Collector Magazine

1. Thou shalt not read Vette News on company time, lest thy employer make it impossible to continue thy car payments.

2. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's car nor his garage, nor his battery charger.

3. Thou shalt not store thy car out-of-doors except for the wife's Toyota.

4. Thou shalt not deceive thy wife into thinking that thee is taking her for a romantic Sunday drive when indeed thou art going out to look at another car.

5. Thou shalt not love thy cars more than thy wife and children.

6. Thou shalt not despise thy neighbor's Edsel, nor his DeSoto, nor even his '47 Plymouth.

7. Thou shalt not tell thy spouse the entire cost of thy latest restoration, at least not all at the same time.

8. Thou shalt not promise thy wife a new addition for the house and then use it to store cars.

9. Thou shalt not allow thy sons and daughters to get married during the car show season.
10. Thou shalt not buy thy wife a floor jack for Christmas.

Meeting:  The August meeting will be on Thursday, August 14th at the Old Storybook Island picnic shelter at 6pm.  The club will provide chicken and utensils.  You should bring your own drinks and a dish to pass.  To get to this picnic shelter, turn into the Parks and Recreation Office off Canyon Lake Drive just across from the Sioux San Hospital and follow the road.  After this meeting we will adopt the Elks Club as our regular meeting place.  Barb won the 50/50 raffle and Ken  won the engraved shot glass at the July meeting.

Past Events:  The trip to Mitchell was fun and we got a lot done in a short amount of time.  The drive inn was cool even though it wasn’t a very good movie!  It would also be better in a place with no mosquitoes!
June 27th was Drive Your Corvette to Work Day.  I’m not sure how many drove their Corvette to work, but 14 cars went for the drive to the Gas Light after work.
Upcoming events:  The Black Hills Corvette Classic starts on Wednesday, July 16th.  You do not need to be registered for the Classic to attend the following events:
There are a few cars driving to Sioux Falls Wednesday morning to go to the Hot Summer Nights in Sioux Falls and drive back on Thursday.  If you are interested in going with them, contact Larry B.  Thursday night is a gathering in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn in Spearfish.   Several of us will be there.  We will eat at the Whiskey Bar and Chophouse (a few blocks down Spearfish Canyon) at 6pm.  The autocross is Friday at 8:45am & 11:30am at Black Hills State University.  Drag races are Friday at 8am at the Sturgis Drag Way.  Friday night we will eat at Shoot The Bull (on Jackson Blvd in Spearfish) at 5pm and then go down to Vette Street which runs until 9:30pm.  For anyone who wants to caravan to Spearfish, we will leave from the Ramada parking lot at Exit 48 at 4:30pm.

Just for Fun:  An elderly man in North Carolina had owned a large farm for several years.  He had a large pond in the back, fixed up nice - picnic tables, horseshoe courts, and some apple and peach trees.  The pond was properly shaped and fixed up for swimming when it was built.  One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn’t been there for a while, to look it over.  He grabbed a five gallon bucket to bring back some fruit.  As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee.  As he came closer, he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond.  He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end.  One of the women shouted to him, “We’re not coming out until you leave!”  The old man frowned and replied, “I didn’t come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond naked.”  Holding the bucket up he said, “I’m here to feed the alligator.”  Moral:  Old men can still think fast.

Meeting:  The July meeting will be on Thursday, July 10th at the Elks Club at 6pm.  Susan V. won the 50/50 raffle and Gene won the engraved shot glass at the June meeting.

Past Events:  The Fourth Annual No Notice First Nice Day of the Year Cruise was led by Lee on May 18th.  We went down Sheridan Lake Road, Hwy 385 and Spearfish Canyon and ate in Sturgis.  It was a beautiful day!

It was still raining on the morning of May 24th, but two cars still went to Wall and the Badlands.  Several cars (was it 12?) went to Faith to see the T-rex exhibit on June 1st.  That was a beautiful day too!  We caused quite a stir in town and we got our picture in The Faith Independent newspaper.  I will bring a copy to the next meeting.  Thank you to Ken and Barb for coordinating the event and to Barb’s cousin for hosting us for brownies and ice cream!  Lisa, Clara and Larry  were the winners in the poker run.

Cruise night went well with only a few light showers early in the night.  I like the way they did it this year gathering downtown.  I’m sure they will smooth out the wrinkles in it next year.  I also think most people enjoyed the Mediterranean food!

Upcoming events:  The trip to Mitchell is this weekend, June 21st.  Meet at the Windmill at 8am on Friday or Saturday depending on how long of a trip you want.  It is not too late to go if you want to.  Call the Comfort Inn in Mitchell for a room at 1-605-990-2400.

Friday, June 27 is Drive Your Corvette to Work Day.  To celebrate the 55th Anniversary of the Corvette, we will go on a drive somewhere for supper.  Meet at Central High School parking lot at 5:30pm.

Friday, June 6th is Cruise Night in Rapid City.  Information on the Black Hills Overdrive website says the cars will gather at 6pm on Main Street instead of Central High School this year.   The parade is at 7pm.  After the parade we will meet for supper at Khoury’s Mediterranean Cuisine.  (That’s what you get for leaving me in charge of supper, but don’t knock it unless you have tried it!)  You can either meet up with us on Main Street or meet us at supper around 7:30pm.
We are planning an overnight trip to Mitchell, SD the weekend of June 21st.  One group will leave Friday, June 20th at 8am from the Windmill.  The route will depend on construction zones, arriving in Watertown late afternoon.  Hotel rooms are in short supply.  The Travelers Inn (605-882-2243) is holding 6 rooms under Larry /BHCC.  Please make your reservations by June 1.  Let Larry know when you make them so he can cancel the unused rooms.   Rates are $60 plus tax.  If we get in early enough, the Redlin museum, Bramble Park Zoo, or the Mellette House are possibilities, or we could cruise around Lake Kampeska.  Saturday we will be touring the lakes area and heading for Mitchell.  We may have a few of the local Corvettes join us for part of the drive.
